Kevin's Custom Canes was started to address the need for canes longer than the standard canes available at
the time. My canes that are ready for sale are 38 inches or longer. I provide instructions for cutting
the canes to the proper length. Most of my handles are laminated for strength. In making handles out of wood you
get areas where the grain is short on curves and other places. The laminating process provides strength at these week
points keeping them from breaking if dropped on concrete on rocks. Over the years I have gathered many kinds
of burls and exotic woods. I blend these to complement the colors and textures of the different kinds of wood.
One thing to remember about burl woods, many contain small artifacts in the wood. Small holes and bark in the burls and some
wavy lines that may look like scratches or gouges in the curly burls. I do sand and attempt to reduce the size of these flaws.
It would take away from the beauty of the wood to put putty or filler in these places. I consider this part of the beauty
of the wood and sometime even accent these flaws. A hand made product is not going to be perfect in every way. Part of my
art is blending these artifacts in the burl into a pretty but very usable cane. When you are choosing woods for your
cane I will assist you to get a look and style that will please you and the strength that you can rely on.
I offer handle blanks and parts that will let you to make your own canes. I am doing this in conjunction with Highland
Horn products to give everyone a wider selection of parts. The addition of several sizes of brass tips,
brass and water Buffalo collars plus several other items will enable the do-it-yourselfers a chance put out a superior
cane or staff. Please feel free to offer comments and ideas for consideration.
I would like to thank
my wife Sammie for her love and tolerance of the sticks, wood chips and general dust I create in the house. I
hope you all understand her suffering while I build this business. Not every wife would put up with wood carving
going on in the living room. My father Dick Rosecrans who has supported this idea by showing both trust in
my judgement and in my artistic abilities. This has encouraged me to start and progress in this endeavor.
I love you both.
Have fun whatever your doing. Regards Kevin Rosecrans
