Crooks And Market Sticks

These are the Crooks and Market Sticks. Crooks were developed to assist the Shepard's in the care and feeding of the sheep in their charge. The crooks were used to help catch and to direct the sheep to the correct pasture. The crooks also could be used to reach into a crevase or hole and pick up the lambs that had fallen in. The hooks on the crooks were used to hold lamps at night to tend to wounded animals or just for light to cook by. The market sticks were used, as the name suggest, on market days to catch a particular animal that had been sold or about to be sold. the market sticks were a little shorter and had a stout stick to insure that they would not break.

Shepard's Crook - this crook is made of Oregon big Leaf Maple -Lace Burl.
It also has a Rams horn spacer between the handle and the stick.
The stick is Mulberry the was cut 2 years ago and let dry slowly.

The second Crook is also Maple Burl with a Black Water Buffalo horn,
Tip and Spacer. It is on a Redbud stick.

This is the Market Stick. As you can see the shape is simular to the Shepards Crook
without the tell tale hook. This is a special order item. I do have one in the catalog.
